This danish group have some experience with all their years on this earth…more than 200 years. They play really good garagerock with punkinfluences and this interview was done in december 2023. They´re a little bit short in their answers but all people don´t talk so much 😉

 

Please tell me a little about the story of Small Town Kicks?

-The band was formed in 2016 by Michael, Kent, Peter and guitarist Benny. In September 2017 Benny left the band and Jesper joined as guitar player.

Please tell me a little about every member, age, work, previous bands etc? Is it a good thing to be older in this style?

-All band members are between 45 and 60 years old. Each member have been playing in various bands since the 80s an up through the 90s and 00s


The name Small Town Kicks, where did it came from and are you living in a small town maybe?

-We are from small town Denmark, so Kent came up with the name.


You come from Denmark, how is it to live there nowadays, racists and politics overall?

-In many ways it´s the same as Sweden.


When you do your lyrics, what are they about, anytime political or is politics nothing to have in music? Is it worth doing music without being political?

-It´s a mix between politics, climate and stories from everyday life.


How would you describe your own music in three words for those who haven´t heard you?

-Garage rock


Is there any there groups you have being compared to? Is it bad or good to be compared?

-Not really


You have named your record Silence , was it any other names you wanted it to be named?
Any specific thought that you named it just Silence?

-We have a song named Silence and we thought it would be a good name for an album with a lot of noise.


Which is the best format to put out records on?

-Vinyl Records


Can you feel that you have done a record if you would release it only digitally?

-It feels more real when you get out something on Vinyl or CD.


When you listen to music, what is your favorite way to listen to music, Spotify, vinyl, CD or what do you prefer?

-Vinyl or CD

Do you buy much records yourself?

– Yes a lot.


Is there any good record shops left in your hometown?

 -Yes two in Odense: Recordpusher (where we have played a few time live) and Moby Disc.


Any good bands from your town and in Denmark overall?

-Yes  PSD and Johnney Wunderbaum to name a few.


What does punk mean to you, is it only a musicstyle, a word or is it a style of living?

-We all came out of PUNK so it means a lot to us


Tell me a little about the following song and what they´re about? Who did them and tell me a little about the story?

a) Alone in the streets – it´s about being alone in a small town

b/ 11:59 – the final countdown and we wanted to be closer to midnight than Iron Maiden

c) Stick in a rut -  it is about not getting anywhere (being stuck)


Are you selling any merch on your gigs, do people buy it? What sells best?

-For now only Records


Which is your own favoritesong among your own songs? And which song is the people choice?

-People say All in my head and a song called Displeasure ( it´s not on the record)

But don´t ask the band. We are fighting about it.


When you do songs, is it one in the group who does them or how do you compose a song?

-We do them all together.

And the five most important things in life?

-We can´t, we have to different opinions.


Do you care about reviews? Which is the most peculiar you ever had, with this band or any other band you have been to?

-We like good reviews, but who is to say?


If you could choose five bands from the past and the history and nowadays and both dead and living bands to have a concert together with your band. Which five have you been chosen?

-Buzzcocks, Kellermensch, Einsturzende Neubauten, Kliche and IGGY POP


Is music a good way to get out frustration and become a nicer person outside the music?

-Yes indeed we play aggressive music and we are really nice people

 

You have never had any thoughts in singing in Danish?

-No


Any good Swedish bands you like?

-Yes a lot: Kent, Mustasch, Slaktkniv, Leathernun, Nomads, Witchcraft, Bob Hund, Skitsystem, Blues Pills, Graveyard. Hellacopters Spiritual Beggars, Painkillers, Hives.


Is it boring with interviews?
Is it much interviews? What do you prefer Telephoneinterviews, face to face or as this one via e-mail?

-We like interviews. We prefer the face to face

Futureplans for the band?

-More concerts make a new album( we already have the songs, but not the money yet) and play in Sweeden
