Malignant Tumour is a band from Czech republic
which have been playing hard music for many
years and I really appreciate that they have
taken their time to answer an interview from me.
This happened in november 2024
You started for 33 years ago and I haven´t heard
your music from then but I understand that you
played a little bit more like grindcore then?
Why did you start to play together in the first
place?
-Reason why we started to play was the same as
many bands did. I just want to make music and be
a closer to my heroes not only to listen them
but also to make music I love and maybe one day
share stage with them. And yes, this sometimes
happening. Sometimes we sharing stage with bands
who was or still are my musical hearoes and this
is just great. When the band started we make
just a bunch of noise, because no one can really
play on the instrument and we used very crappy
ones, just those we had money for and they were
very cheap, some even DIY instruments. It was
very hard, but it has some special wibe then
because we were very young and hungry to play.
I see on Discogs that many members have been
passing through the years. Is it some of you
whon have been around all the time?
-Yes, me. I am the only original member of the
Malignant Tumour, who start this band 33 years
ago. Rest of the boys, I am playing with now,
came later to the band, but all of them have
been in the band for quite long. And they played
in other bands before they join, so music
carrier of all members are quite long, I have to
say. No rookies. Hahahaha...
Have you always singed in english? Never in the
Czech language?
-Never. There are few songs in different
languages in Malignant Tumour back catalogue,
like swedish or finnish, but that was only for a
joke. I love to sing in english and I am writing
all lyrics originaly in this language. Czech is
quite difficult one to understand and very, let
say, hard language to write lyric and not much
people get the point so I prefer the english.
Politics and music, does it belong together?
-Of course. Whole history in music prove it,
isnt it?
Which is your most political song?
-Oh, don´t know really, but probably all the
songs from period of 98 -2001. I was much into
that topics and tried to change the world as
everybody at his young age do. Later I realised
how naive I was. But it is part of the grow
mature. I don´t regret it.
Which are the best political band through all
times?
-It might be AGATHOCLES for me. There are also
many others i like, KREATOR, DISSAFECT or NAPALM
DEATH might be the ones I still follow....
Your latest album Maximum Rock n Roll came on
the punklabel Papagajuv Hlstael records, how
come it became just this label?
-We are friends with Pavel for many years. He
released also our specil box as 15th annivesary
of our „In Full Swing“ album and we liked his
enthusiasm and great work. And on the top he was
interesting to release also new album so we just
said yes and it was simple like that. It´s a
gentleman agreement. Not really any contract. I
also like personaly what music he releasing and
it is nice to be in same team as few of my
favorite punk bands. Oh yes. Also he is working
hard on the promotions acroos the globe. Well,
it is not like Nuclear Blast and likes, but it
fits to our band what he is doing. Underground
family.
Will you do anything more on that label or was
it only one of a kind with Maximum Rock n roll?
-So far we are happy with PHR but we don´t plan
much into future. But if PHR will be interesting
to release other our album, why not. But if
someone will pay us half milion of pounds, we
might change the record label. Hahaha.
Is there anything you could have been done
better on your latest album so here some months
after it have been out, something you regret?
-No regrets, really. I love that album how it is
and I never turn back like this or that could be
better. If we think that way, let´s make next
album better...
Maximum rock n roll is a very good description
on your music, what is the most peculiar you
have been told that you´re playing, I mean which
sort of music have people called you?
-Of course people thinks we play like Motörhead.
What else you expected? But I wont be that sure
for this description. Our music is far more
aggressive and way more in „extreme“ way, most
probably thanx to our roots. But we can live
with this „label“, I have no problem with it al
all. Motörhead on speed is what we hear the most
about our music and specially about our last
effort. It is not bad to be labeled as one of my
heroes. Even though we are MALIGNANT TUMOUR and
not Motörhead.
Your thoughts about punk, what does it mean to
you, is it only a word or is it a
lifestyle?
-It is definitely life opinion and maybe you can
say lifestyle as well. But I like those punks
who are open minded and not only shouting
„destroy the system“ and getting drunk. Punk has
for me some ethics and moral, but it could be
different for anyone else. But in our brave new
world punk is slowly dying, I guess. But there
is still few bands or persons I love in that
scene.
Best punkbands around right now?
-I like much british ones like CHAOS UK or
Gabbas band FUK. EXCTINCTION OF MANKIND,
VALLENFYRE, DEVIATED INSTINCT could be my faves.
Also Swedish ones like MOB 47, DRILLER KILLER or
WOLFBRIGADE I like very much. Not to forget
BRING THE DRONES with Charlie Cimex on drums,
this is really blast and I hope to see this all
star team live sometime. But my favorite sedish
one is definitely BULLET!!!
Good bands from Czech republic as you think is
so good that they´re worth mentioning, both old
and new bands?
-If we speak about punk/crust music, I would
like to mentions ANTIGEN from Prague, great
music with really great female voice. You guys,
should check the Czech punk label Phobia
Records. He is releasing many punk albums what
they are the best out there now.
How is it to play this sort of hard music in
your country?
-Easy I have to say. We have many nice venues
and some of the top orgainzers here. Many
foreign bands ( if not
all of them) including Czech republic to
their tour schedule, so it only speaks for
itself. Everyone wants to play in Czech.
Which type of people comes tou your concerts?
-All of the sorts. Older then we, younger then
we are, punks, metaklheads, AC/DC rockers,
football hooligans, das and moms with kids.
Really!!! I think that our music connect all of
those and this is amazing i have to say...
Have you been outside Czech republic and played
anything?
-Oh yes. If you think we are existing 33 years
now it would be sad to not play abroad of Czech
Republic. We played over 1000 show in our
history. Almost everywhere in Europe, USA,
Canada and Japan. We NEVER played in Sweden,
Finland or Norway. Would some be up to make us
an offer?
Do you have any place that you dream about
plaing live at or in?
-Anywhere we never played yet. Specially in
Sweden.
How is life to live in Czech republic overall
and how is it in Ostrava(I have been in Prague
two times). How is it with racists, economic
situation and so on?
-Life in Czech is fine I have to say. We are
most atheistic country in the whole world, so we
don´t have much those clerical stuff, which are
strong for example in Poland. As everywhere we
have stupid and thiefs politicians, now very
strong populist parties, but it has not much
impact to my personal life, because i don´t much
care and listening them. If its gonna be worse,
only time will show up. So far I am happy here.
Easily and freely I can make rock and roll here
so this is basically what I want.
Czech republic is famous for beers and I love
beer myself and I have done a lot of beers
myself, if Malignant Tumour would do a beer,
which type would it be and what have it been
called(or maybe you´r e straightedge?)
-When we celebrated 25th anniversary of the band
back in 2016, our frinds from local brewery
Quasek made for us beer called The Metallist. I
was great decent lager, if I remember well. But
I am not big beer drinker, I prefer dry red wine
of rum or whiskey mixed with zero coke( I have
diabetes). But if you will find your way to
Ostrava one day, I will guide you to good pubs
here where you can have the best Czech beer.
Don´t be worry, I am not straight edge. Hahaha.
When you do your songs, how is it then, is it
one in the band who does them or how do you do a
new song?
-Usually someone (mostly me or guitarist Koral)
came up with motive or whole song and than we
work on it together at rehearsal room. I am
doing mostly songs when sitting alone at home,
drinking. It works somehow miraculously.
How many LP/CD have you done through the years
and how can I get them (I only have Maximum Rock
n roll, Dawn of a new age and In Full swing?
-Maximum Rock´n ´Roll is MALIGNANT TUMOUR´s 7th
album. I am pretty sure that you can find one
before „The Metallist“ at distros. Rest of the
older ones are sold out. All what we have and
what is available you can find at metalshop
website, who selling our merch and records. Find
it here
https://www.metal-shop.eu/b/malignant-tumour/.
Of course you can also contact us directly or
our record label PHR for latest record and
merchandising.
Do you ever have counted how many songs you have
done?
-Hahahahah. No. Over 100 I guess.
To release an album only digital, would that be
something for you or must you release physical
records?
-We are old boys and we belongs to the scene
where music was always on something physical.
LP/CD or tape. So even we are selling our music
digitally and trust me, that we don´t see much
money from that, we prefer a physical stuff.
That´s why we are doing those big, nice and
spectacular covers with inserts.
Do you buy much records yourself? The first, the
latest and the most expensive record ever
bought?
-Oh, not much, but all records I have I am a
listener. I am not collector. Latest one I
bought was a BRUTAL TRUTH first album on vinyl,
just couple of weeks ago. And the most expesive
one could be a KREATOR box with first six
albums. But I am thinking to buy a IMPETIGO
vinyl box „Ultima Sezione Cadaveri“ and if I
will do, this is gonna be my most expensive one.
You have been doing a lot of cassettes back in
time and now you also release your new album on
cassette, how come, isn´t that a very old way to
put out music?
-I love tapes and this is my favorite format.
And there are still people who love it same as
me, so why not to make them happy and release
album also on tape. I don´t care if it´s old way
or new one. Makes people happy is what is
priceless.
Tell me a little about every member in the group
now, name, age, family, interests, any band
before and something really bad about ever one?
-Oh you need to know some sensationalist news?
Hahahaha....
Well, I am Bilos, playing guitar and doing
vocals in Malignant Tumour and also in second
band called SICK SINUS SYNDROME where we play
old school pathological grindcore. I am 48 and
my life is turning last 35 years around extreme
music. I work for Obscene Extreme festival,
Extreme print where we print merch for bands all
over the world. I have no kids and I am big fan
of motocross.
Our bass player who is in tha band since 2003 is
Šimek, who is called Anti Simex. Hahaha. He is
47 I believe and wiorking in city council of
Ostrava – Vitkovice. He has three kids.
Our guitarist Koral is the oldest one. 53 and
still going on. Joined the band in 2006, one kid
and fuck knows what
he doing...
Drummer Bohdič is the most chill man on this
planet. He is 51 I guess and has no kids, but a
big house he has to keep. In the band since
2012. There is no bad things about boys I should mention...soemtimes we getting on nerves, but it is usual thing if you are together for such a long time. |
