Franska Trion
has sailed up as one of my favorite bands. Quite
unlikely I would say a few years ago and if I
had said it to myself then I would have just
dismissed this. But they are more punk than many
others and then I don ́t mean that they play
punk....really not but their whole own style
makes me think of punk in some strange way.
Matti took some time to answer the questions and
it was a fairly short interview but once again
thank you for giving me the chance to interview
you. April 2026
You started playing in 2002 and now you are soon
celebrating your 25th anniversary, did you ever
think that when you started playing together?
-We probably didn't think anything, everything
just happened to be as it happened to be.
Will there be anything really fun happening next
year when you celebrate 25 years as a band?
-Nothing we have thought about yet, but not
impossible that we will pay attention to it in
some way.
I
understand that you have been asked before but
Franska Trion....how did the name come about? I
would have liked to have heard the discussion
and were there any other bands on the agenda?
-One of us was asked if we wanted to play at a
Walpurgis party, at the freeform club Brötz in
Gothenburg. We had only jammed together a couple
of times then. Håkan Strängberg, who had the
club together with a couple of partners, asked
us what we should be called. Write any name you
want, we said, and then we were baptized. Håkan
knew that Victor Furbacken, who played double
bass, had grown up in France.
You have been quite spared from member changes,
was it obvious that you would continue as a band
when Thommy passed away in 2019?
-Pretty obvious. Tommy was passionate about the
band, and I have to sing my songs anyway.
I'm mostly into harder music like punk, metal
etc etc but I like Demian, Sundström but I had
dismissed you pretty early without having
listened to you, discovered you on På Spåret,
did you get a lift up when you were there?
-Not much. Rather, we have worked our way slowly
forward, not least by playing a lot live.
I once named you on my website as the band that
sounds the least punk that I like but is still
the most punk in some way... thought about it?
-I understand that. If punk is to do what comes
to mind. Just go for it. Follow your heart.
What is your relation to punk?
-Nothing special. Good music is good music, and
somehow always punk.
When you play live, what kind of audience comes,
ages, distribution of girls/boys. Is there any
type of person you miss at a gig (unfortunately
I have never seen you yet)?
-The audience is very mixed, comes from all
directions and is of all ages. That's a good
sign. Those who like us really like us, it's not
a trend, nothing hip.
What is the best and the worst thing about
playing live?
-It's nothing bad. But to play live, and as it
seems, bring comfort and joy to people, it's
fantastic.
Do you play songs from all albums live or is
there any album you leave out?
-We play pretty much all the songs from our
repertoire. We usually ask what they want to
hear, and we do that song.
When you released your Christmas album, were
there many traditionalists who thought it was
crap that you did it your way?
-Yes, many were angry. But even before and after
that, many have been angry with us.
You have probably gotten a lot of reviews over
the years, how is the strangest one you have
received?
-There have been many funny reviews. Once we
advertised some gig, using quotes from reviews
where we had been sawed.
Do you care less about reviews now in "older
days"?
-I've never cared so much that it affects me.
It's just an opinion from someone with maybe
completely different references than me.
The last record was Nya Kulor, you must have
something new going on soon..?
-Yes, new is on the way...
As I have understood, there doesn't seem to be
new vinyl pressing on the records that are sold
out, why not?
-There may be new pressings. Som ett
spjut genom dagarna has been printed 4 times I
think.
Which of your records is the best selling?
-Som ett spjut...
Which of the albums are you most satisfied with,
the most complete album according to yourself?
-Hard to say, all of them have reflected a time
from my life.
If you were to describe your music in three
words to someone who has never heard you, what
would you say?
-Faith, hope, love.
How do you think it is to live in Sweden
nowadays, politically, economically etc etc?
-Nothing I think about. The sun rises and the
sun sets.
Politics and music, do they belong together?
Your most political song?
-No. Has no political song.
A bad day is also good(En dålig dag är också
bra)....brilliant I think....was there a lot of
listens after it was the signature melody to The
Meaning of Life(Meningen med livet)?
-No, I don't think so.
Which are the songs that are most popular among
the audience and there will be most sing-alongs?
-Ini din famn maybe, but also many other songs
usually attract sing-alongs.
Is there any song you are really tired of
playing?
-Nope.
Is there any really good bands/artists in Sweden
that you would like to recommend?
-Evert Taube
What is
Franska Trion compared to in reviews or is it
impossible to compare you with anything?
-I don't
remember unfortunately.
Futureplans for the band?
-We just keep going.
For yourself?
-I just go for it |
