Chris Rolling have answered a lot of questions from me in may 2025. His band
is playing high octane rock n roll punk. If you haven´t heard them….check
them out now!
Tell me a little about how you started, why you started, when you started
and if you have played in any other groups before?
-I started playing guitar a long time ago, when I was a teenager, 1st try
with an acoustic guitar but I sucked, I really wanted to play electric one
but I didn't have enough money to buy one, so It took a little while to save
money and finally get one, and 'til today I never stopped.
Yeah, I have played in several bands, made a few records and stuff but it
always ended in a bad way, let's say I was very good to surround myself with
bad people, maybe because I had needs that no one understood ! Learning to
play an instrument, writing a song or feeling good on stage are within
everyone's reach, from the moment you practice those things as most as you
can, meeting the right people to make a band, worse, to make a band that
last is a different story, it's hard, really hard, you got to be lucky, very
lucky.
Members? Please tell me a little about every member , age, work and
something bad about every one?
-Me, Chris Rolling, guitar and lead vocal, 54 YO, work ? mmmm, officially
graphic designer but I don't see myself as a worker, I quit working a long
time ago, I hate to work, I still do here and there, when I got bills pay
and shit, I mean I take jobs I don't like but as less as possible. Bad thing
about me ? Too many to even quote any (laughs).
Brice Duval, bass and backing vocals, 51 YO, he works as a technician in
show business (laughs) bad thing about him ? He drives fast, which makes me
nervous sometimes (laughs).
Thib Adlersend, drums and backing vocals, 31 YO (yes he's a baby), he's a
sound engineer but here and there he also works as technician in show
business as well, bad thing about him ? Well, he's younger than us, life is
really unfair, don't you think so (laughs) ? My
review of your new records sounds like this…what about it? “I
like this and many others should do it too. Because this type of fast punk
rock n roll with Motörhead influences we may have heard before but it is
such a nice drive in this type of music so it is impossible not to love it
because it is such a nice sound. They calm down the hardness but not the
tempo in A van to load where it almost becomes fast punkcountry. It's hard
not to notice the charm of this French band that sings in English. I didn't
think French people liked to speak English, but here they are singing. 15
songs wonderful music is not much to doubt about but should be a given
purchase for all people who like punkrock of the noisier kind. We get almost
40 minutes of really good punkrock and I always get fascinated or rather
often fascinated by how much good punkrock there is around the world. So if
you like to be easily run over by music, this is truly your band. Check out
right away! 12/5-2025”
-Well, I'd say thank you so much for your words, seems you got the point :-)
We like Motörhead as we like Country, Hard Rock, Pop, Rockabilly and so on,
anything that's connected to Rock 'N' Roll ! We sing in english cause we
speak a very very bad french, even my own surrounding doesn't get a word
when I open my mouth, english was the only hope (laughs) !
Does it feels like you have released a record if you only put it out
digital?
-In my eyes, there's no way in hell to release only digital stuff, to me a
record exists when it gets released in physical, on vinyl, otherwise it
ain't an "album" it's a "data", I'm not saying Spotify and stuff are evil
(well, when it comes to money, of course they are) these days it really
helps to grow up your audience, it's very handy in a car and shit but
personnally I don't have any streaming account, last CD I bought was 25
years ago, only vinyl matters to me, same for Thib and Brice ! And vinyls
are good for health, every 20 mn you got to get your ass off the chair to
put the other side of the record ! You
sings in english, and I dinb´t thought that Frenchmen wanted to talk english?
-Most of French doesn't want and/or don't like to speak english, but to me
it's the Rock 'N' Roll language, nothing against those who sings in French
in any style of music, it's just not my stuff. There are stuff I like in
French but to be honest it's pretty rare.
Your lyrics, what are they about, can you put in some politics sometimes or
is it something you think that have with music to do? Your most political
song?
-Lyrics are about many things but quite often about things I hate, or absurd
stuff, but it's never political, in the sense we hate politic, really, you
have no idea, people who think politic can bring something good in 2025 are
getting fooled, I'm not a young dude anymore, so I saw what politic have
done to people through all those years, it has only one effect, it divides
people, nothing else, it puts them against each other meanwhile those who
are "above" are laughing and having good times ! You wanna change the world
? Starts with yourself, be someone good with those who deserve it, be an
example, be as flawless as possible, then things around you will start to
change, in a good way, but it doesn't mean being weak, be nice and fair with
good people and without any mercy for those who disrespect you !
So our most political song would be the last one of the B-side of our last
record "F-Word Song", a very good resume of what we think (laughs).
Which are your favorite political band, I mean which is the best band to get
out politics in the best way?
-None, I don't like political bands, at the 1st listen, I can appreciate
musically something I don't know, but at the moment I discover they're
political, I'm out !
In France we have and had a lot of Punk bands singing in French and very
political, those bands never been my cup of tea, again nothing against those
who do that, just that it's not my stuff, I don't like those who tell us
what to do, what to think, how we're suppose to be and stuff ! When someone
is telling you should do this or that, you need to be more than super
suspicious, especially if you didn't ask for anything ! Is
France a good punkcountry nowadays or how is it? Any good bands worth to
mention?
-Mmmmmm, there're territories more open than others when it comes to Punk
Rock, Bretagne is the 1st area that comes to my mind, there's what people
called a "scene", in sense there're more bands, bars and clubs than other
parts in France, I won't risk myself to quote any band cause I'm not sure if
they fit in "Punk", besides I'm not sure of what"Punk" means today, I even
don't considered ourselves as a pure punk band, we're in a certain way, but
you'll find people to say we're everything but punk, but always the same
story, huh, people and their opinion, at the end it doesn't matter !
France have a good history with old bands like Warrior Kids, Komintern Sect
and other bands, is that something that you like and which of the old bands
are the best?
-Never heard about those bands, so I checked bout' them on line and saw
they're bands who sing in French and "described" as political, so I'm sure I
saw their names passed by in the past, maybe some friends got me a listen
but my ears didn't like it, really it's hard for me to listen that kind of
driven music sang in French, again just not my taste, but they're right to
do what they do, cause you've got to do what you love and when you find some
people who like it that means you were right, don't get me wrong there's
many french bands I truely like, and I always thought we had killer bands
here, has all times, but my favourites are all sing in english, I also love
some German bands, Italians, Spanish ones and so on but they all sing in
english, I'm aware it may sounds weird but I can't help it (laughs). Is
there any of the old bands still playing?
-Old French ones I love that still play ? Not that much, some I really loved
splita few months ago, but
there are some that are still here, they stand still, some "oï" bands are
still touring and making records, but it's a "style" I'm really not familiar
with, so I'm not aware of what really happens, all I know is that are still
some great Rock 'N' Roll bands in France, but like us, they're not seen as
"punk" or "metal".
Damn you all to…hell, where did the name came from? Any special meaning with
it?
-The title came to me when I rewatch The Planet Of Apes, when Charlton
Heston says that at the end, but I wrote the whole song after my mom's
passed away, I was really a mess, add to that the behevior of some close
people during the pandemic at the same time, I was feeling really hostile, I
wanted the whole world to burn, it's really a nihilistic song, the kind of
stuff you feel when your whole existence crumbles to the ground, when you
realize the world is a giant cannibal that eats itself daily, all you've got
is a scream, you tell the whole humanity to fuck off !
When you play live, which type of people comes, is it only punks and rockers
or how is it? Old and young?
-Mainly punks, metalheads and Rock 'N' Rollers, but in fact there's all kind
of people, it's clear that young ones are a minority, Rock 'N' Roll people
these days are quite old, but sometimes I'm surprised that really young
dudes come to talk with us after a show, it's cool, it happens that really
young ones are there, it seems that kids are still fascinated when they see
a Rock 'N' Roll band. Is
there any people you miss on your concerts?
-There's never enough chicks, I won't complain to see more of them (laughs),
but it happened many times to see some hotties dancing and going wild while
we're playing some super fast and crazy stuff, It surprises me but delights
me at the same time !
Have you done anything more than Cannonball Holocaust and Damn to you all….,
if you have how can I get it??
-Yeah, our 1st LP "Spitfire" was released in 2019 by Wormholedeath, and a
self product EP we've made in 2016, you can get both on Bandcamp.
Please tell me a little about the following lyrics, A
van to load
Blind(so fucking Blind)
Cannonball holocaust
-"A van to load" is about how life goes when you're doing music, touring and
stuff, that we don't make big money, and that we have not always the time to
keep on talking with people or having a drink after the show cause we got a
van to load (laughs).
"Blind (So fucking blind)" may gives the feeling it's a anti religion
number, but it's not, in fact it's about people who are waiting for a
savior, believers always hope a superior force to take care of them, same
mechanic with politicians, some believe that they could change their lives
or make them better, many people think that if they meet the right person,
man or woman, their life will be better, it's an illusion, nobody can save
you but yourself, you want a better life ? Start with yourself, the only
responsable of how your life goes is yourself, you wanna see some changes ?
Stop thinking, talking or dreaming, just DO, action has no rival, accept to
fail and suffer and keep on moving on !
"Cannonball holocaust" ,man, this one got no lyrics it's an instrumental
(laughs) but if it have had some it would have been about a lonely guy who
try to get away from cops in Andalusian desert (laughs). Who
does the lyrics and how do you do your songs. Is there some who comes to the
rehersal with a whole song or do you jamming them together?
-I write all the lyrics and music, but it's just tiny songs, It needs the
two other guys to get it done, generally I write most of stuff at home on
acoustic guitar but it happens that we mess around during rehearsal, we play
stupid stuff and sometimes it brings a song, the 1st number of our last
record "Pendejos 666" came out that way, we were joking with a death metal
kind of licks and as usual Thib's recorded it with his phone and when I
listened to it when I got back home, I found it pretty cool, so we put it on
the record. And yes we jam here and there, we love to messing around, we can
slaughter Jazz, Blues, Pop or famous songs, just cause it make us laugh,
we're big wankers and we love (we need) to laugh, but it does not prevent
serious work ! If
you should describe your music in three words for someone who never have
heard you-which three words comes to mind?
-Mmmmm, 1) Rock 'N' Roll 2) Fast 3) Merciless
Please tell me a little of following records and a little about it.. The
Record which makes Chris Rolling Squad sound like you do?
-Hard to say, there's so many great records but "Payin' the dues" by The
Hellacopters has that right mix of punk and hard rock, it has that garage
tone but with a heavy thick sound, this record mattered a lot. The
first record you bought yourself?
-AC/DC "Highway to hell" my mom paid it but it was my choice. The
record you want to have recorded and be a part of?
-Van Halen I (laughs) The
Record you like which you shouldn´t like?
-Too many, I've got Kate Bush records, Fleetwood Mac, The Cars, Simon &
Garfunkel and so on, super mainstream stuff, I'm also a huge Beatles fan,
and other things a guy like me isn't supposed to like, but who decide that ?
Ah yes, guardians of good taste (laughs), I really don't care about it, if
something pleases my ears everything's all right ! The
Record which made you wanna play rockmusic yourself?
-"Road to ruin" by The Ramones, it seemed within my reach from the guitar
point of view (which is not in real, playing downpick like Johnny Ramone is
really tough), I mean more than Van Halen anyway.
Have you been much outside France and played? Which are the dreamplace to
play?
-We played in Germany and it was really cool, we'd love to get back there,
we're open to play anywhere, as long as we dont lose money (cause, we don't
have any), Spain would be great, people seems to love Rock 'N' Roll there,
Sweden of course, the label that releases our records is Swedish, so it
would make sense, right ? Scandinavia in general would be awesome, otherwise
let's say close European countries, like Belgium, Switzerland, Austria,
Italy could be possible I guess, knowing it ain't that far, no visa or
papers shit needed, so if someone is interested to book us tours in those
areas, please get in touch ! After, I've got contacts in Australia and stuff
but it's damn far and expensive but who knows, someday maybe ? Of course any
Rock 'N' Roll band wouldn't be against to play in the US but these days it's
just totally impossible, the cost of visas, and the fact you have a good
chance of seeing your status denied and then losing a lot of money, it's
just totally out of reach, when I see what happened to The Hellacopters, The
Peawees or The Baboon Show lately, it's crazy ! Otherwise Asia would be
great as well, well, in fact we're open to play anywhere, as long as it's
organised the right way ! If
you could put together a big concert with both dead and living bands and a
minifestival with five bands plus Chris Rolling Squad, which five bands have
you choosed then?
-A big concert, Mmmmmmm, Motörhead 1st lineup, AC/DC with Bon Scott and The
Ramones.
A mini festival with 5 bands ? I'd pick up bands that still exist
- Zeke
- Supersuckers
- Peter Pan Speedrock
- The Peawees
- The Mud City Manglers Is
there any swedish bands you like?
-I love Swedish bands, always did !!! If my memory's right the 1st time I've
heard about a Swedish band was in 1993, a Stockholm trio called "Indian Red"
with their first and unique album "You Can't Do That's Why We Do It", I
bought the cd after a review I've read in a Rock Magazine, it's an absolute
masterpiece, from Punk Rock to Psychobilly, passing by Blues Rock, Heavy
Metal, Funk and so on, those guys are out of space players, the production
is huge, songs perfect, the kind of record that should have been a worldwide
hit but as many it stayed confidential, If I had a label it would be the 1st
record I'd release on vinyl !
Then, of course I discovered The Hellacopters, The Nomads, The Robots, The
Turpentines, Union Carbide Productions and so on, and all the ferocious
punks like Anti Cimex, Genocide Superstars and stuff, I knew Charlie and
Cimex Records because of Knife For An Eye, so yeah I love Swedish Rock 'N'
Roll !!!
Rock 'N' Roll is an American music, and we all know the magic that happened
after with English bands, but next the 2 other countries that made a
difference with so many amazing bands were Australia and Sweden. Do
you care about reviews? Which is the most peculiar you ever had, with this
band or any other band you have been to?
-It's always cool to see someone reviewing your music, and I'm not gonna be
hypocritical, a good one is always pleasant, but a bad one don't bother me
at all, first everybody has the right of his own opinion and my ego ain't
that big to be offended if someone writes something bad about us.
'Til now we always had really great reviews for our 3 records, but we had
some, although very kind, I was able to see the person who made it wanted to
be nice but didn't listen to the record, or at least was damn drunk or high
(laughs).
And it's a part of the game, you expose yourself so you've got to accept
opinions whatever they are !
Which bands does people compare you to? Is it frustrating that people
compare bands with other bands or is it understandable?
-Here in France very often people quote "Peter Pan Speedrock", which I take
as a big compliment, knowing we love PPSR, and it's not frustrating to be
compared with other bands, it's rather a good sign, as long you're not
called a ripoff or a copy cat (laughs) and in 2025 we all do that when we
talk about bands, we say "it sounds a bit like this or that", so
everything's fine. You
have a done a new record now, Damn you all to….hell? Are you satisfied with
it or is it something you wish you have done different?
-Well, I'd tell you the same about our 3 records, they're a picture of what
we were at the moment we recorded them, after a while we play or sing some
stuff in a different way than we've made on the records, but it's normal,
during live shows it happens you feel things differently that what you
played during recording, so, songs keep on evolving, but yeah I'm satisfied
with our records, I won't change anything on it, and they're made, I ain't
watching back, I'm more interested by the next one ! Are
you planning for another record soon? Tour or what happens next?
-From the moment we'll have enough good songs we'll head to studio to make a
new one, now, when ? I don't know, we won't force ourselves to make a new
one asap, we'll do it when we'll be ready, and we're not the kind of band
that work building songs piece by piece, like "hey I've got a great riff or
a chorus, let's jam to find some verses", to me the whole song has to come
in one shot, then I bring it to the guys and then we work (a lot) on
arrangements and especially on vocals, then it has to pass the test of time,
if you're not tired to play it during rehearsal after 2 or 3 months you know
you've got something.
Touring, yes for sure, since day one we're constantly playing live shows
here and there, sometimes it's an isolate date, other times several in a
row, and some tours as well, now, there're still cities in France we haven't
played yet, but I'd love that we play more in foreign countries, so we'll
see what happens next, it depends on many parameters, it's not all up to us.
Which is your own favoritesong among your own songs? And which song is the
people choice?
-Tough one ! We have some new ones we're working on that are, in my eyes,
the best thing I have written to date. Choosing one among the previous
songs, I can't pick up just one (laughs), I guess my favourites are those
that bring us the big thrill on stage !
About people choice, I don't know, but it seems "Night got me runnin" and
some "Country/Punk" numbers of our last record seem to be quite welcomed.
Which is the record that you always must have in the tourbus?
-Many, really many, but it's rare we don't listen to Zeke "Death Alley", but
sometimes the driving time is really, really long so we listen to a lot of
stuff, all kind of stuff ! Do
you buy much records, or is it only Spotify and those type of things to
listen to music? Is there any good record shop in your hometown?
-Oh lord, I buy way too much records, more than I can really afford, It's a
bit of an illness with me (laughs), it happens that I spend 3 months without
buying anything, well mainly cause I'm in a trouble with money (laughs) but
all of a sudden I buy one on line and the time I go to bed I've ordered 10
(laughs), depressing (laughs).
I don't have any streaming account, so, no Spotify for me at home, only
vinyls, Brice and Thib have smartphones with a Spotify account and we use it
in the van when we're on our way to play shows.
The closest record store from my home is 35 minutes driving, prices are
fucked up so I never go there, sadly my main source is Discogs, but I'd like
to go on more record conventions, I love spending time browsing records, I
miss the time when we had record stores everywhere. Is
music a good way to get out frustration and become a nicer person outside
the music?
-For me, yes, it's vital, art is a good way to put out all the dark things,
anger and frustration we all got, question is, is that makes me a better
person outside music ? Honestly I don't know, I hope so !
What shall a young guy do today to shock their parents as the way we did
when we were young? They have already seen everything
😉?
-Mmmmm, doing the opposite of what's trendy these days (laughs), I don't
know, I guess any kid who'd say to his folks he wants to be a priest would
traumatise them to life (laughs), with a bit of imagination it should be
easy to find something to shock your parents, even in 2025 (laughs). Is
it boring with interviews? Is it much interviews? What do you prefer
Telephoneinterviews, face to face or as this one via e-mail?
-Not at all, it's always cool, we don't do what we do to stay in the
shadows, huh, it's always touching when someone gets interested by our
stuff, so whatever it's phone interview, face to face or via e-mail, I'll
always ok to answer.
Futureplans for the band? And for yourself?
-To keep on doing what we do, to play as most live shows we can, making
records, and especially having fun, as long we're having fun and that we can
do it physically we'll keep on going ! For myself ? I don't know, to stay
alive and as most healthy as possible seems to be a good priority, before I
leave this planet of damned I'd like to get my dream car and......well,
we'll see !
Wisdomword?
-Don't think too much, tame your fears, always dare to try, accept to fail
(as long you've done your best, most of people doesn't do their best !),
listen to your inner voice, don't pay attention to the outside noise, live
by your own rules, deep inside, you already know what's good for you, so
just do it, no matter what the rest of the world thinks.
Something more to add?
-Nope, except thank you Peter !!! |
